What is a Seamless Pipe?
Seamless pipes are derived from solid steel that is in sheet or bar form and is formed into a solid round shape known as “billets” which are then heated and cast over a form such as a piercing rod to create a hollow tube or shell. Alloy 400 can be easily welded by gas tungsten arc, gas metal arc or shielded metal arc process using appropriate filler metal. Postweld heat treatment is not required, but thorough cleaning after welding is essential for optimal corrosion resistance, otherwise there is a risk of contamination and embrittlement.
When the amount of hot processing or cold processing is properly controlled and the appropriate heat treatment is selected, finished products with a wide range of mechanical properties can be produced.
Like most other nickel alloys, alloy 400 is usually difficult to machine and work hardened. However, excellent results can be obtained if the correct choice of tools and machining is made.
